What is Authentic Pilates?

Developed over 90 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method of  Body Conditioning is a unique system and form of exercise. It is comprised of a series of over 500 specific exercises that aim to stretch, strengthen, and lengthen the muscles of the body. This method promotes long, lean muscles by stabilizing what Joseph Pilates referred to as the “powerhouse.” Pilates method not only strengthens and tones muscles; it improves posture, and provides flexibility and balance. It promotes healthy bones and increases energy. Most importantly, Pilates enhances the abdominal strength from which all of Pilates movements derive.

Joseph Pilates designed these exercises in an effort to develop the body uniformly. Instead of performing many repetitions of each exercise, the Authentic Pilates™ method utilizes fewer repetitions with proper attention to body control and form.  Pilates’ interest was in having people focus on engaging their minds and bodies simultaneously while executing his particular movements with precision, awareness, and stability. His exercise method is performed on specifically designed apparatus and supervised as well as instructed by an Authentic Pilates instructor.
